Choose the drink family
Start with the drink format you actually want: espresso, milk drink, iced coffee, or filter. Then ask what bean or roast is being used if that matters to you.

A calm way to ask about beans, sweetness, milk, ice, and brew method without overcomplicating the counter.
A better coffee stop
Start with the decisions that matter for your visit.
Start with the drink format you actually want: espresso, milk drink, iced coffee, or filter. Then ask what bean or roast is being used if that matters to you.
For sweet drinks, say how sweet you prefer them. For milk or ice changes, ask plainly and accept that a particular menu may be designed around a fixed recipe.
Names vary between shops. A short description of the cup you want is often clearer than relying on terminology alone.
Start with black, milk-based, sweetened or filter coffee. That first choice is usually more useful than beginning with specialist vocabulary.
Say whether you want the standard recipe, less sweetness or no added sweetness. Ask which milk options are currently available rather than assuming a substitution.
Specify hot or iced, then check the available size. A familiar drink name can use a different recipe or serving volume from one café to another.
If bean choice, decaf, allergens, price or a surcharge affects the order, ask before it is made. Leave anything the menu does not establish as unknown.
